The Don Ferrarese Charitable Foundation

About Don

Don Ferrarese, Married to Betty for 58 years, has called Apple Valley home for the past forty years.  Growing  up  in the Bay area of California, in a first generation Italian family, Don learned the value of hard work early on, working in his families market and Deli, until he was recruited to play major league baseball in 1948.   Don pitched for 18 years professional Baseball, achieving unforgettable milestones, such as striking out Mickey Mantle, tossing out the Ten Millionth Baseball with President Eisenhower,  being a special guest on the Ed Sullivan show and not the least, sharing hitting records with the King of Swat himself, Babe Ruth.

After a rewarding career in the Major leagues, Don Moved to Apple Valley where he owned and operated Hugo’s, an Italian  Deli widely known and  recognized even today.  After Hugo’s, Don opened Ferrarese’s, an Italian restaurant that quickly gained in popularity for it’s authentic cuisine and friendly service.  To this day, Don continuously receives requests for his recipes, which he gladly offers to those asking.

Rightfully, after two successful careers, Don could have afforded himself a much deserved retirement, enjoying days on the golf course with friends and family, without worry or need.  However, this was not in Don’s character as he embarked upon offering his energies and talents to charitable causes, volunteering wherever he could, and whenever he was asked.

One of the more prominent charitable services Don has been involved in, is with his partner Jack Fales.  Together, Don and Jack, holding over 100 auctions, have raised nearly $2 million with their infamous Wine and Memorabilia auctions, dedicating hundreds of hours and thousand of dollars, all for the benefit of local non-profit groups needing to raise monies to support the local community.

Don continues his generous spirit of giving with his day to day efforts in ensuring the long-term success of The Don Ferrarese Charitable Foundation

With a great fastball and one of baseball`s best curveballs, Ferrarese was hampered early in his career by control problems and later by arm trouble. He walked 567 batters in his first 522 professional innings, while striking out 502. He walked just five per nine innings in the major leagues. In 1954 he won 18 games and batted .300 for Oakland in the Pacific Coast League. In 1955, for San Antonio in the Texas League, he walked 47 in 99 innings, going 9-0 with a 1.48 ERA. In his first big-league start, he struck out 13 men, but lost to Cleveland 2-1. On the same day that Carl Erskine pitched a no-hitter against the Giants in 1956, Don lost a no-hitter against the Yankees in the ninth inning on an infield hit by Andy Carey, but won the game 1-0 on Don`s RBI off Bob Turley. In a 1959 game, he hit three consecutive doubles off Dick Donovan.

But I Got Them Out!

My first game was in Relief on opening day of 1955 in Washington. My first hitter was Mickey Vernon. I had the basees loaded, and he popped up. And that got me one out. Runnels-Pete Runnels-was the secon hitter and I got him out somehow.
So her i am, i`ve got opening day in Washington. The president`s there, and i get the two ours. and they take me our of the ball game. I said "What did i do wrong?" Of course, i wasn`t used to being taken our in th minors, this right-handed-lefthanded thing, you know what i mean? And i was devastated.
And, of course, the old-timers understood. Harry Dorish, I remember in particular got me aside. He said, "No, this is the way we do it. You didnt do anything wrong. We just keep switching-you know." But i didnt know about that.
